The directory buttons in Netscape Navigator™ have never served much use for me… so with a little ResEditing here and there I customized the button names and URLs to make me happy. I thought others I knew would like to do the same, so instead of shipping ResEdit instructions out to all my friends and family, I though that it would be easier, and cooler, to bang this thing out. So here we are: Navigator Button Editor.
I attempt to answer all of my email within a couple of days after I receive it, and all comments and suggestions are always welcome and valuable - what new features would you like to see? (Thank you to all who have already written!)
• Netscape Navigator™ versions supported:
Navigator Button Editor has been successfully tested on Netscape Navigator™ versions 1.1N, 2.02, 3.0/Gold, and 3.01b1/Gold. Future versions of Netscape Navigator™ will certainly be supported when available. (It would be nice if Netscape would build this function into Navigator!)
• Macintosh Systems supported:
Navigator Button Editor is FAT BINARY and has been successfully tested on Macintoshes ranging from an LCIII with System 7.1 to an 8500 running 7.5.5. There isn't any fancy code in here so it shouldn't have problems with any future system revisions.
SHAREWARE INFO
Navigator Button Editor is shareware, so if you use it you should pay the $5 registration fee.
Upon sending in your registration you will receive a key via email which will allow you access to the "import/export settings…" feature, and you'll rest comfortably with the peace of mind that you are supporting a starving Mac OS developer!
TO REGISTER
The single user shareware fee for this program is US$5. Please run the accompanying "Register" program to register your copy and for more information please read the "How To Register" document. Once you have registered, all future updates will be free!
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Launch "Navigator Button Editor" and click on the "Find Netscape Navigator™ to Customize" button. NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE EDIT NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR IF IT IS CURRENTLY RUNNING!
2) Select the copy of Navigator that you wish to customize. BE SURE TO ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP COPY!
3) A dialog will appear with the names and URLs of the 6 buttons. Simply enter your favorite URLs (http, ftp, news, or mailto) along with new button names. You may use the Tab key to advance through the name and URL fields.
• Select "Save" to save your changes click
• Select "Revert To Saved" to revert to the previous saved settings
• Select "Factory Settings" to revert back to the Navigator factory default values
• Select "Export Settings" to save your current button and URL configurations to a file
• Select "Import Settings" to load saved button and URL configurations
DISTRIBUTION
You may distribute Navigator Button Editor to all your friends and loved ones provided that this README is included along with the Register program. If you want to distribute this program on disk or CD please contact me first so assure that there is not a newer version available and so that I can ask you "So... are you going to send me one of the CD's?".
